LOS ANGELES — Even though Wesley Matthews had not dusted it off in a game for a week-and-a-half, the bow had some twang to it.

The Lakers have preached the need for everyone on their deep roster to stay ready and sharp, even as players like Matthews were feeling the cold side of tough lineup decisions. But nonetheless Matthews was prepared in overtime on Monday night – as his teammates were fighting off the drag of another extra-long game two evenings before – and sank his fourth and final 3-pointer that felt like the final word in the Lakers’ 119-112 victory over Oklahoma City.

It was LeBron James (28 points, 14 rebounds, 12 assists) who led the way in the most meaningful sense in a fifth consecutive win. But Matthews’ 16-point contribution carried extra weight after he did not play in four straight games entering Monday night.

Scratches for All-Star Anthony Davis (right Achilles tendinosis) and Alex Caruso (hand) gave Matthews a window and he helped push the Lakers over the top against another team with a losing record punching above its weight at Staples Center.

After going two overtimes with Detroit on Saturday night, the Lakers needed another to weather Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (29 points) and the short-handed Thunder (10-13), who had just eight active players.

In the final minute of regulation, Dennis Schröder came up with a go-ahead jumper and a free throw against his former team and twice defended shots from Gilgeous-Alexander on defense. It was a sometimes-rocky night for the 27-year-old, who only hit one of his seven 3-point attempts on the evening.

The Lakers (19-6) were just 1.2 seconds away from victory when Kentavious Caldwell-Pope made a ghastly mistake: He fouled Gilgeous-Alexander behind the 3-point line.

Though the players and coaches argued against the call, and Quinn Cook and Devontae Cacok furiously drummed their hands on the back bumper to try to shake the Thunder guard at the free-throw line, he calmly sank them all. James couldn’t get a 3-pointer to fall at the buzzer, sending the Lakers into their second straight overtime.

The Lakers dominated overtime after playing from behind for much of regulation. They scored seven straight to go up 117-110, while the Thunder closed the game misfiring on 11 of their last 12 shots.

The Thunder never lacked hustle. While both teams struggled with outside shooting, the Thunder got good penetration from their wings, especially Gilgeous-Alexander and Darius Bazley and Hamidou Diallo (a former Slam Dunk champion) helped compensate for the team’s lack of size with high hops for rebounds in the paint.

Rim protection was the facet of Davis that the Lakers missed the most: They gave up 60 points in the paint.

The poor shooting led to uncomfortably long dry spells that neither team could take much advantage of. The Lakers finally seemed to grasp control of the game early in the third quarter as Oklahoma City scored just three points in the first 5½ minutes. But the most the Lakers ever led by was seven – on a reverse dunk by James – before the Thunder managed to close the quarter on a 21-6 advantage.

Vogel decided to start Markieff Morris, who had not played in four straight games along with Matthews. He finished with six points and four rebounds in 25 minutes, looking a little rustier than his compatriot.

The Lakers play the Thunder again on Wednesday before facing the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday to close out a five-game-homestand.
